Problems stem from soils that are alkaline, and root diseases causing insufficient mining of soil nutrients. Early symptoms are the chlorotic appearance of leaves. As the tree matures over many years, the chlorosis increases, brown spotting takes place on the leaves, scorching and premature leaf drop occurs. Eventually, the tree will show enough dieback and it will no longer enhance the landscaping and would need to be removed.

For many years, therapeutic treatment only improved the health of the tree to a limited extent. Treatment is recommended in the fall, especially during the September or October months.

Maple Tree Decline

Maple trees suffer from a mixed group of problems contributing to the syndrome of maple tree decline. Other issues can stem from soil having too much alkaline present and diseases that cause a lack of nutrients for the roots.

Symptoms

  • Early symptoms include chlorosis,  or the yellowing of leaf tissue due to a lack of chlorophyll.
  • Left untreated, the chlorosis will grow with the tree, causing leaves to have brown spots and fall off prematurely.
  • Trees in late-stage chlorosis will have twig and branch dieback, which is the progressive death of branches or roots starting at the tip.

The above symptoms can occur over a twenty to thirty-year time frame. Eventually, the tree will suffer enough dieback that it will no longer be able to grow leaves and will need to be removed for safety.

Treatment

Luckily, treatment is available that can help improve your tree's health to a certain extent.

  • We recommend getting a treatment done in the fall, as September and October are ideal months for this process.
  • Treatment will enhance color, making it more green.
  • Treatment helps relieve summer scorch and other stresses.
  • Treatment prevents additional dieback, but will not revive branches that have previously died. (A skilled arborist should remove those.)
